Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs)
- Soil-transmitted helminths, (STHs), which include hookworm, roundworm and whipworm, have plagued humans since earliest recorded history and are some of the most common infections in the world.
- These chronic, disabling and often disfiguring infections contribute to a downward cycle of poverty and deprivation.
- HKI has worked to control STHs for years as part of integrated anemia control, including integration of de-worming into school health programs, into vitamin A supplementation campaigns for children younger than 5 years of age, and as part of prenatal services.
- In Cameroon, the STH program is being integrated into the existing onchocerciasis CDTI network and is part of a global strategy to integrate community-based programs. The program will reach more than 1 million people in Cameroon.
