Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs)
- Soil-transmitted helminths, (STHs), which include hookworm, roundworm and whipworm, have plagued humans since earliest recorded history and are some of the most common infections in the world.
- These chronic, disabling and often disfiguring infections contribute to a downward cycle of poverty and deprivation.
- HKI has worked to control STHs for years as part of integrated anemia control, including integration of de-worming into school health programs, into vitamin A supplementation campaigns for children younger than 5 years of age, and as part of prenatal services.
- We work to control STHs in 11 countries in Africa and Asia. For example, in Cameroon, the STH program is being integrated into the existing onchocerciasis CDTI network and is part of a global strategy to integrate community-based programs. The program will reach more than 1 million people in Cameroon.
