The Gift of Sight: Program Helps Native Children Obtain Eyeglasses
Noel Lyn Smith reports from Navajo Pine High School in New Mexico during a ChildSight® program visit that occurred on World Sight Day (October 13th), an annual event to increase awareness of the global problem of blindness.
"Vision screenings check for nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Astigmatism is caused by an irregular shape of the cornea or lens and tends to afflict Native American children at a relatively high rate compared to other groups in the U.S."
Last year ChildSight® New Mexico screened 4,764 children and provided 1,551 of them with free eyeglasses.
