Nutrition Advocate for West Africa Urges Urgent Action at the UN General Assembly

Nutrition Advocate for West Africa, Former President of Cape Verde, Antonio Mascarenhas Monteiro called for regional leadership and national commitment to break the cycle of malnutrition that is the underlying cause of the death of an estimated 600,000 children under five across West Africa.

Speaking at the United Nations High Level Meeting on Nutrition, held during the UN General Assembly in New York last week he said, “It is urgent to act now if we want to break the cycle of poverty and accelerate economic and social development.”

While the West African region is taking steps towards mitigating the impact of malnutrition, only three countries among the 16 in the region are on track to meet Millennium Development Goal One, which aims to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.
