"Letter: The Peanut Solution"

HKI CEO Kathy Spahn wrote a letter to the editor regarding a New York Times Magazine article by Andrew Rice, "The Peanut Solution," which was published on September 5th.

She comments that, "despite the challenges discused in the article, ready-to-use therapeutic foods remain an important tool for those working to address undernutrition.  It is unacceptable that an estimated 35 percent of child mortality is driven by undernutrition. The nutrition community, including the United Nations and Helen Keller International, has created a comprehensive framework to overcome hunger and malnutrition with an emphasis on prevention and treatment. Preventing malnutrition is the vastly preferred solution and is possible through strategies that include improving household feeding practices, increasing access to healthy affordable foods and strengthening health and sanitation services.

"Right now, however, we need proven strategies like Plumpy’nut to alleviate the immediate suffering of millions and to help address tragedies like the one currently unfolding in Niger, where nearly 300,000 children are dying from the food crisis."
