"A Famine Looms in Niger"
HKI's regional director for Africa, Shawn Baker, wrote a guest blog for The New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof's blog, On the Ground.
Baker discusses the current food crisis facing Niger, and the fact that the global community is not doing enough to help.
Hundreds of thousands of children in Niger are facing death from acute malnutrition. However, ready-to-use therapeutic foods, such as the peanut butter-based Plumpy'nut, have greatly enhanced the capacity and ease with which acute malnutrition can be treated.
As Baker states, "Niger can either be seen as a never-ending problem, or as the frontline of the world’s commitments to put an end to the unnecessary deaths of children."
