"An Early Start for the Visually Impaired"
TEMPO, a weekly news magazine in Indonesia, prominently featured HKI's Opportunities for Vulnerable Children Program (OVC), highlighting our pioneering work to ensure children with disabilities receive the same educational opportunities as their peers.
The article focused on our program's activities in South Sulawesi, a province of Indonesia. The program succeeds due to its approach of early intervention: "a combined effort to develop the independence and potential of handicapped children, which is carried out during the children's pre-school period." Children receive special training to learn basic life skills, and are also introduced to Braille and eventually attend public schools. Teachers at these schools and community members are also trained to accommodate the particular needs of these children. During the past 17 months, 76 elementary schools received school-based inclusive education training, while 19 villages received society-based inclusive education training.
