Maternal and Child Health Week in Sierra Leone: Improving Capacity for Human Development

Freetown, Sierra Leone - On November 22nd, a Health Fair at the National Stadium officially launched the Mami en Pikin Welbodi Week (WBW). Activies included the free distribution of bed nets for all families with infants under 6 months, Vitamin A capsules, de-worming tablets to 1 million children 1-5 years the Tetanus Toxoid Vaccination to 1.2 million women 15-49 years of age throughout Sierra Leone.  Education was also a significant component of WBW; the importance of hand washing, bed net usage, breastfeeding, and oral rehydration therapy for diarrhea were emphasized by Peripheral Health Unit staff across the country.
