All 13 wheat flour millers of francophone West Africa commit to combat vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire - All 13 wheat flour millers of French speaking West Africa and key development partners met for 3 days in Abidjan to launch a new commitment by the private sector to combat vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Deficiencies in essential vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin A, iron, folic acid and zinc, are major causes of premature death, disability and reduced work capacity throughout the world. Eliminating vitamin and mineral deficiencies (VMDs) is critical to improving the survival, growth and development of children and the health and survival of women. One of the most cost-effective strategies for sustainable control of VMDs is food fortification – engaging private sector food companies to add vitamins and minerals to commonly consumed staples and condiments.
