Morocco

Helen Keller International has been working in Morocco since 1986, and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the government in June 2000. HKI conducted integrated health and socioeconomic development projects that address Trachoma Control.

The objectives of HKI's integrated trachoma program in the schools and communities are: eliminating the disease as a cause of blindness; increasing awareness of the SAFE strategy among the target population; reducing the risk of disease transmission through Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) activities; increasing the demand for surgery; and establishing a system of information, management, and monitoring and evaluation.

HKI developed teaching tools to combat trachoma, such as posters, stories, games, and coloring books accompanied by teaching cards, as well as introduced concepts related to trachoma into primary schools' manuals. In addition, we designed a traveling play on trachoma.

A final evalutation of HKI's trachoma efforts in Morocco is currently underway.

Believe, when you are most unhappy, that there is something for you to do in the world. So long as you can sweeten another's pain, life is not in vain.
