Democratic Republic of the Congo
In 2005, HKI signed a memorandum of understanding
with the government of the Democratic
Republic of the Congo and established
office space in the country. Current
activities include:
HKI
is organizing national vitamin
A supplementation (VAS) campaigns
including deworming activities
twice a year through funding from the Canadian
International Development Agency. Working
with the Micronutrient Initiative, UNICEF
and USAID-funded partners, HKI is integrating
vitamin A distribution into the National
Immunization Days to immunize
children against polio. The first VAS campaign
took place in May 2005, reaching more than
10 million children. The second campaign,
in November 2005, reached an estimated 11
million children.

HKI
is also in the planning stages of setting up pilot programs to integrate VAS with
Community-Directed Treatment with Ivermectin
(CDTI) to combat onchocerciasis.
HKI is also participating in an initiative to fortify wheat flour with iron and folic acid working with partners that include UNICEF, the Micronutrient Initiative, the National Programme of Nutrition under the Ministry of Health and Midema, a private sector company that mills both wheat and maize flour. A 2005 survey conducted by the Ministry of Health and UNICEF showed that 67% of women and 71% of children in DRC are anemic.
A logo for the fortified products has been
developed along with other promotional
and marketing materials included a
brochure, stickers, posters and banners. Please click
